The Other Symmetries of an Absence

No confinement is ever dignified. And each seclusion is the calcification of suspicions between a state and its people; A mineralised distrust that turns itself into boundaries and borders and margins and walls of containment.

The Other Symmetries of an Absence is a two player installation, written to ponder such confinement.

Created to lament the detentions of authors, poets, students, professors, reporters, lawyers and activists in my country (India), the game is a modest attempt at finding solace in the promise of companionship, while contemplating the violent cost of withdrawing bodies from public spaces and imaginations.

After all to bind a body in confinement is to bind it to the most limited definition of itself; It is to turn the project of citizenship into a pantomime of such bodies that are devoid of landscapes and devoid of society. Until the world at large is dotted by the singular absences of people who have been violently withdrawn, leaving only a reflection of their presence in our lives.
